What is the difference between 8x4 and 16x4. I currently have the DPQ3212 which is 8x4.

It appears you didn't like my reply...perhaps too oversimplified.
8 × 4 would be suitable for 150 Mbps
16 × 4 for 300 Mbps
32 × 8 for 1 GbpsThese aren't written in stone but an idea of modem to data plan.

if your using cox for phone your stuck with what they require you to use and when they say upgrade you upgrade

Your DPQ3212 is also a telephone modem (eMTA).
