Connecting to home VPN from outside the network
Has anyone set up OpenVPN and been able to externally connect to it? I'm able to connect, but the speed immediately drops to nothing (and by that I mean literally bytes/second), so it's functionally useless. I'm currently using the built in OpenVPN on my TP-Link AX6000, and connecting from my Pixel 6 running OpenVPN for Android. Things I've tried so far: changing the port from the default forcing traffic to UDP disabled compression I'm wondering if Cox is doing something to prevent connecting to a VPN from outside the internal network?477Views0likes1CommentCOX + AWS VPN Client terrible pack loss
I WFH and my company is switching from a Cisco VPN Client to AWS VPN Client. My internet is amazing (230D/10U) when I am not on a VPN and works pretty good when connected to Cisco VPN. However whenever I connect to AWS VPN Client I have intermittent terrible connection times, small image/js assets (<1mb) for a webpage or email will take a minute to reach my client. In working closely with my network engineers it appears the issue is between Cox and AWS, how does the issue get resolved? Hello, I have been having issues with my McAfee Safe Connect VPN software working on my Dell laptop. I currently have Cox Gigablast internet service. Safe Connect initially worked fine for about a week after I purchased it and downloaded onto my computer. Then it started acting strangely. The start/stop button would stop working, and even though the program says I am protected, an IP check shows I am not. And the button stops working altogether with an error message that something went wrong and to try later. I have been in contact with tech support from McAfee for a week now with no resolution. Tech support remotely connected to my computer, uninstalled/reinstalled, and it did not help. Another tech told me that everything was working fine on their end, but that it is likely an issue on Cox's end that is somehow blocking this VPN from working. I'm trying to set up a VPN that I can go through the router so that it supports multiple devices. I currently have the Arris TG1682 Panoramic router through Cox and I cannot find ANYTHING to help me with this. My main reason for getting this set up is to stop the DDOS attacks while gaming. It's become quite annoying since that new website was created recently finding IP address through searching gamer tags. I have tested my Cox residential connection via speed tests and get near the advertised speeds (150MB/s down, 10MB/s up) on the Cox website and via my Ubiquiti router management application. I need to use kerberos enabled scp and ssh to transfer files to a remote server, but the transfer speeds are <500KB/sec in real world tests. Has anyone seen this issue? Is VPN a solution? I recently bought a protectli firewall box that runs pfsense. I am trying to use the box as a dedicated VPN for my home network. However, I have never been able to get the VPN on my firewall box to connect to the internet. I currently have a modem/router combo (Arris TG1682G) through Cox, and the pfsense box is connected to it via ethernet. My current setup is: wall >> Cox modem/router >> pfsense box connected by ethernet >> computer connected to box by ethernet. On my computer, I can get internet access from this set up. I can browse and stream, but my actual IP address is exposed. The VPN on the box will not connect and the kill switch does not engage. I have tried putting the modem/router into bridge mode and even disabling NAT on the box. No dice. I spoke to Cox support over chat and got the company line about not supporting VPN. Another post on here the Cox rep suggests that "once you are on your company's VPN you are no longer on the Cox network." This is erroneous, as that is the only link to the internet from your house. At this time, I have tested every possible connection method results below using Fast.com... Cox WiFi - 20-30mbps Cox WiFi VPN - 0.5-5mbps Cox LAN - 140-240mbps Cox LAN VPN - 3-78mbps VerizonLTE - 10-15mbps Verizon LTE VPN - 15-20mbps I have the Cox 300mbps service. I understand the LAN speed will be the best. I also understand that VPN will slow things down. However, the fact that my VPN and non-VPN speeds are much more comparable on Verizon can only suggest that the Cox network is degrading the connection. All indications are that my home router provides no discrimination to traffic either so that should have no bearing on the performance. There is no reasonable scenario where my 300mbps surface connection should be worse than LTE connection hotspotted through a tablet. My only questions are 1) Is this a technical flaw in the Cox infrastructure somewhere in the chain, or an intentional FUBAR by Cox to encourage home office users to getCox Business Internet service? 2) Is anyone currently using their company VPN with more than 10% of their off-VPN bandwidth?1.4KViews0likes0CommentsVPN connectivity issues
I work from home periodically using an RSA token on my cell phone to create the VPN with my office network. I am constantly being kicked off my office network folders. Email, intranet, sharepoints work fine but the actual network folders will kick me off and tell me that I'm working offline. I click the work online option and it works for 4-5 minutes and then kicks me off again. VPN is steady supposedly so why is this happening? I sometimes receive an error message saying my ISP is limiting access. Cox is no help, says they don't support VPN issues and it's not a problem on their end. My office IT team tells me everything is ok with my VPN and network settings. What are we missing?
