Random Ping Spikes and Packet Loss
I am at a loss of ideas with my internet connection quality. I have been getting random ping spikes and packet loss in all online games and discord. This has been going ever since I moved into this house in September 2019, which is less than a mile away from my old house. First I had problems with the internet making my modem/router (Netgear c6300) turn off and on. This did not happen at my old house. I called cox about 5 times to have them say it was the modem/router so I went out and purchased a Netgear cm1200 and Netgear r7000. Same thing happened for about two weeks. I called cox and they said that I have to get "their modem" or they can't do anything to help. So I got the Cox Panoramic modem/router. Same exact problem was happening. Called Cox about 5 times and they sent out a tech that replaced the moca filter and all the ends on the coax cables in the box on the side of the house and in the room where the modem was located. Problems still persisted and I called cox another 5 times at least and they sent out another tech. This one said he could do nothing because there was something he couldn't fix and needed to schedule maintenance. That took about 3-4 days and they had fixed the majority of the random restart and disconnects. So after that I had switched back to the modem/router so I didn't have to pay a monthly fee for the Panoramic. I switched back to the cm1200 and r7000 and still noticed random ping spikes. I was so frustrated and felt like I tried everything but it still wasn’t fixed. Some things I have tried at this point: new coax straight to box outside from modem, moving the modem to a different room in the house, attenuators, not using router, three different computers, and new ethernet cords (cat7). So after all that I thought maybe it was the modem again even though the cm1200 is a top of the line modem I bought another new modem and router (SB8200 and XR500). The issue still persists and I had called Cox another 2 times to tell them what was going on and they sent out another tech... He came and replaced the coax from the modem to the box outside. He basically gave me the rundown and said the internet was not meant for gaming and I understand this but it’s so frustrating when you're playing a competitive game like CS:GO and you start teleporting and getting ping spikes to 100-200 to a US West server at random times. I don’t see my friends or other players having this issue. I’m lost on what to do at this point. I've spent a lot of money and time trying to diagnose this problem. Here is my modem status page if it helps any: https://imgur.com/a/rxmF6lS14KViews2likes36CommentsHigh Ping and Packet Loss in Gaming
In games such as CSGO, Rainbow Six Siege, Fortnite, and PUBG, I have really high ping and packetloss. Sometimes the ping is great and the packet loss is bad, but other times the ping is horrible and so is packet loss. Sometimes my ping ranges from 10ms - 70ms. Othertimes it ranges from 60ms - 300ms. Packetloss sometimes ranges from 0% - 10%, but other times it ranges from 10% - 100%. Sometimes I can't even watch videos in 720p. I contacted the ISP once and they sent a technician out, but he said that nothing could be fixed. They swapped out for another modem and nothing. He said it can't be fixed, however I don't believe that because we shouldn't be having poor internet like this.11KViews1like1CommentCan’t Access E-Mail using Outlook or MacMail (Error Code 3170)
Can’t Access E-Mail using Outlook or Mac Mail (Error Code 3170) Starting on 10/2/19, I’ve started getting the following error message: “Outlook cannot find the server. Verify the server information is entered correctly in the Account Settings, and that your DNS settings in the Network pane of System Preferences are correct.” I made no changes to my Outlook e-mail client; this just started happening out of the blue. Then as a test, I attempted to download my e-mail via Mac Mail. This also failed to connect, just got a spinning wheel that forced me to use a “force-quit” to get out of the Mail app. I updated my Cox password and also tried resetting the modem. It should be noted that I’m able to access my Web Mail via Cox’s main website; no problems there. Because I cannot access my e-mail using two separate e-mail clients, I strongly believe that the problem is with Cox. My system details: Outlook for Mac 2011 (14.7.2) Mac Mini running Sierra 10.12.6 Although I’d made no changes to either e-mail client, I reviewed the Port settings for both servers (993 and 465) to make sure they were correct. The “Use SSL to connect (recommended)” check boxes are checked for both Incoming and Outgoing. For Authentication I have “Use Incoming Server Info” applied (I also tried “User Name and Password” to no effect). I’ve had issues with my Cox e-mail several times in the past, so I’m quite familiar with how to set up my e-mail clients with the correct information. I would greatly appreciate any and all assistance, advice, help! Thanking in advance...Solved6.8KViews0likes18CommentsSpeed problems : SOLVED ! If you don't want to read this paragraph at the bottom about me complaining about Cox, then just read this: " The Cox Panoramic wifi modem/router that you rent for 11$ a month does not work the way it is advertised, and you are much better off going with a separate modem and router that is meant for providing high speed internet service". This type of internet works for laptops, Netflix, and basic streaming services. But when it comes to playing online video games, forget it. Even if you use the ethernet, you only will get between 200-300Mbps download, and 2.9Mbps upload speed. These speeds still lag when you play online video games". I decided to upgrade my service to cox Gigablast as of 20March2020. With the world under quarantine, especially the entire state of California, I said okay I definitely cannot deal with the Lag on PS4 that I have been dealing anymore. So I went to the local cox store after setting up my new service online and picked up my device. The customer service representative said it wasn't necessary that I rent the device, as I could buy a separate modem and router from Best Buy or where-ever, but it would cost about $400 with a separate modem and router. I decided to try out the cox panoramic modem+router combo that they offer for 11$ a month. I go home, plug it in and it was a super easy set up using the app for it. I connect it to my PS4 and test the connection. This piece of garbage (which is supposed to put out up to 900+ mbps basically almost 1 Gbps) only put out 24.9 Mbps download and 2.4 Mbps upload. This is down right criminal at these speeds. But before I called my lawyer, I decided to call tech support, so that someone could come out and see if the signal needs to be adjusted at my apartments. They are supposed to come out tomorrow (March 23, 2020) and hopefully fix it. Just the fact that I have to go the extra mile, and MAYBE get the issue fixed is absolutely ridiculous. My apartments are literally ONLY able to get Cox service. Isn't this considered a MONOPOLYat this point, since there is no other competition available? I have always had so many issues with cox, and its sad that they can't provide the working class of the America a fast internet service, especially whatwe are paying them for. I will hopefully remember to make another post tomorrow afterPAYING a tech support member a FEE in order to get my SERVICE that I justPAID for to WORK like it is ALREADY SUPPOSED TO. If it doesn't, well maybe I need to start putting this money that I am paying for this BS service towards law school, so that I can sue them into bankruptcy. Either that or call my friend at the local new station and put this company in the spotlight. Oh and if you don't believe me, then why would they sell cox Panoramic Pods separately? I have my PS4 sitting right next to the wifi box and it doesn't do any better than 24.9mbps. if you plug it in via ethernet, the best that I got was just below 300mbps. This is a speed that still lags during a online video game like Call of Duty. If you don't want to read this paragraph above about me complaining about Cox, then just read this: " The Cox Panoramic wifi modem/router that you rent for 11$ a month does not work the way it is advertised, and you are much better off going with a separate modem and router that is meant for providing high speed internet service". Ever since I moved into this house years ago, I have had intermittent connection issues. Multiple service reps have been out here to "diagnose" my connection, but no one can ever seem to pinpoint the cause of my connection. I have recently cut everything but internet (because we know Cox is a monopoly in this service), and I continue to have connection issues. It's only the UPLOAD I have issues with. I pay for: 100 Mbps DOWN, 10 Mbps UP. My last test I received: 86.33 Mbps DOWN, 0.00 UP, with a 44% packet loss (29 ms latency, which is acceptable). It has always beenan issue with my UPSTREAM connection. Multiple modems being used, no change. When performing this test, I always disconnect from the router and connect straight into the modem so we can ensure the router is not causing the issue. I have used Cox's provided routers with the same issue, but currently I am using a retail router. I am so tired of paying so much money to get so little back. I would just like to get a working internet connection Edit: I would like to mention this issue is sporadic. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I can run a test with a normal range then come back in 5 minutes and I get the above. 20 minutes later it may work againif I am lucky, but if it does, then I can expect it to go down within another 10-20 minutes. No consistency, which is what makes diagnosing my issue such a problem.1.7KViews0likes2CommentsInternet Speeds
I have Cox Gigablast (Coaxial) bundle with contour TV (7 cable boxes) and contour voice (phones work on the 1.9ghz) with the panoramic gateway but I disabled the wifi on the gateway because its signal is not good at all for my 7000 square foot home and I connected a Luxul XWR 3150 V2 AC-3100 Dual - Band router that has 4 external antennas, which I bought 2 days ago with the Cat5e cable that came with the router. On the 5ghz wifi, I only get maximum of 450 mbps, 2 feet away from the router. Shouldn't I be getting atleast 800 or 900 mbps? I understand 1000 mbps is very unlikely but I am not satisfied with 450 mbps. Cox changed the spiltters in August. I have tried the speed tests on multiple different channels and 450 mbps is the highest I've got. I've power cycled the gateway and the router and multiple speed tests. The DNS is set to Google's Public DNS. Nothing on my network is a old that would slow down my speeds. The coaxial cable is as tight and I've had others make sure the connection is tight. How can I get close to the speeds I am paying for?1.4KViews0likes3CommentsConnection
So I’m a pretty new member for Cox... it’s been just over a month and without any problems! Which is really good since I’m a student during the summer and full time throughout the year, so I REALLY need consistency! Well, today was my first problem. So I came home from working all day and my Internet was working this morning but I came back and it wasn’t working and the US/DS light is flashing. Called support line, they couldn’t do anything besides tell me to turn it off then back on. Now, I have to wait 3 days until I can even get a tech out here to even look at it! As a full time student and full time two job employee, I can’t afford three days without internet. I expected better customer service from the support lines and at least something available next day for help restoring the connection... now I’m going to have to figure out how to get all my assignments done without my laptop, considering they’re all online, this won’t be a walk in the park if it’s even possible. Definitely not what I had expected in my first 2 months of being a customer. There needs to be more options for fixing internet that is down rather than simply, “unplug, then plug back in”. And on top of that, a $75 maintainance fee at “the technicians discretion”!? Are you kidding me? Once again, I am a college student, paying for his own schooling, his own apartment, and his own internet service bill. I don’t have $75 laying around to dish out to someone at their own discretion. The fact that I haven’t touched the modem (which I rent from cox) since installation or any of the cords near it or connected to it, and I haven’t had any previous problems whatsoever, leads me to believe this is a “Cox” problem. AND on top of ALL of this, some way, somehow, they messed up my address? And have my service at the completely wrong address which I can’t change until Monday of course, and I have to go in to the store, mind you, this is where I purchased the service initially. So since I had set up the service in person, there shouldn’t have been ANY confusion whatsoever. But no my service is registered at the complete wrong address. The numbers aren’t even similar to my current address and neither is the street! It makes no sense as to why this mistake was made and really upsets me that I should even have to deal with this before I’ve even been in service for 2 months! So thanks for adding another good load of stress on an already stressed out college student. Time to wait 3 days to hear from someone.1.3KViews0likes1CommentInternet down in NWArkansas, told "it's your modem" by tech support
Yes, it could be the modem... I mean, I've had the thing for seven years or so now, but before sending your paying subscribers out to spend $80 on a modem in the middle of a snowstorm during a dangerous pandemic, MAYBE we should be absolutely sure the company we are paying to provide and service our internet access has done literally everything possible on their end first. Last night (AFTER having my Valentine's Day plans streamng romantic movies with my wife wrecked by our internet going down then being told by tech support that my modem was the culprit), I saw notifications on the Cox App of no less than three outages in my area, all of which clearing with no improvement in our connection... Today, I awoke to feed our baby before getting ready to drive in the snow solely to get a new modem (because I was assured by Cox tech support that it was my modem, not THEIR overtaxed infrastructuren that was to blame) and what do i find...? Yet another notification of yet another outage in my area. So is Cox's equipment failing multiple times in the same 24-hour period, or is it the same problem NOT being repaired but merely being cleared without resolution (while your paying customers are being told that there are no problems with your infrastructure and that it's our equipment), or do I still need to go out into the snow and Coronavirus wastes to get a new modem? PS- Oh...there is now an internet connection with Cox on my 'bad modem'... apparently my modem has spontaneously repaired itself. HALLELUJAH! It's (apparently) a miracle! FunFact: if there hasn't been a thunderstorm but the weather has been very cold/snowy/icy, the chances that connectivity issues are caused by inside plant versus outside plant is essentially nill. I managed multimillion dollar, nationwide structured cabling service contracts for years. Stop blaming your customer's equipment, wasting our time and our money, before you know your cabling and nerwork is 100% sound. So let me give Cox my spitball theory. Snow melt is getting into your patchwork outside plant cable connectors, shorting out the connection... at night, it freezes, breaking connections entirely, especially at splices and service splits that haven't been looked at by your technicians for years. Surprise! OSP degrades over time. None of this is caused by my modem, incidentally. Also, my seven year old modem is exposed to much less weather than the outside plant cabling that has been out there without maintenance (separate from service) for half a decade now. And, no, I am not happy with my service today. Clearly someone isn't doing their job, even though I recall having been billed (monthly) for them to do it. #stopblamingyourcustomers #fixyourinfrastructure1.2KViews0likes2Comments
