Why use a vpn anyways. It can cause issues with email, is slows you down, and in all honesty, you really gain nothing, except lost money paid to the vpn provider.
This is very true as geolocation is now a part of account security but a good VPN does get you around the pornhub block in VA.

You in VA?
Nobody is blocking the site. PH doesn't want to implement the age-verification law recently passed in VA. The law means well but it's not very effective.

pornhub block in VA
Interesting story but I don't think is relevant to OP's issue. There are many different reasons to use a VPN. Privacy/security is one. Getting around video blackouts and content sharing(Netflix) is another. Last, it can help with connecting to your home network when away to access your cameras or other remote systems.

It may help with privacy, but is really useless for security. Using it to get around video blackouts, can actually cause more video blackouts, because as soon as these companies determine that a vpn is being used for that purpose the entire ip block the vpn uses will get blocked. Trust me, the entry do accomplish that takes a few minutes, look up the ip address, see the entire block size allocated to site, look the site up in all the rest if the sites used to determine ip blocks, and then block ALL of them in one sitting.

Who are "these companies" and how would these companies determine an IP address is trying to "get around video blackouts"?

This does a decent job laying out the pros and cons of using a VPN server.

The article brings up an interesting point about logs. I don't think it's a matter of keeping logs...but more about who can access these logs. Good providers have servers overseas to avoid court orders. If someone suspects you're up to no good on a stateside server...[knock, knock, knock]. Of course, this would be a very big "if."
