do i need a modem or router? which model & brand is best?

i want to avoid rental fees on equipment. i am thinking of buying netgear cax80. i recently upgraded my internet to ultimate 500. i guess my old modem/router is not capable of the higher internet pac...

What's the make and model of your old modem/router?  Cox does authorize the DOCSIS in the CAX80 on their network.  Do you have AX devices?  Do you subscribe to landline service?

    Netgear C7800 we have a magicjack that relies on internet connection

      You cannot just use a router your would also need a modem or a modem/router combo. You would also need to contact us so it can be provided to your account. This link will provide the ones we support www.cox.com/.../cox-certified-cable-modems.html.

      DOCSIS 3.1...Dual Band...32×8 channels...Gigablast-able...you own it.  Whoever said your C7800 is not capable is wrong.

      I don't see a problem for MagicJack.  MagicJack only needs 5 down and 3 up (Mbps).
