Refund Check
Hello:
I am writing today to request an answer to a situation concerning my Brother-in-law's account. I did contact Cox by phone, and was told there wasn't anything they could do. My brother-in-law was put into long term care around the beginning of October 2024. I went to the Cox store and cancelled his account and returned his equipment. I had a power of attorney to show them at the time. We cancelled his account and when I went to pay the bill, I had to pay the whole bill and was told there would be a refund.
My brother-in-law passed away on October 17th, 2024. His daughter closed out his account sometime last week, after all was gone through, or so I thought. I completely forgot about the refund check from Cox. Actually, I didn't know we would get an actual check in the mail.
So, the bank won't cash his check because he no longer has an account. Cox said they would not issue another check. From what I understand, a power of attorney is not any good after the person passes away. I just want to make sure there are no other avenues I can go down before we give up on this.
The check is only for $35.98. It was sent out from the bank of New York Mellon in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
