Hello EvaFam,
In most cases the word packet switch does equate to VOIP in conversations and is why you would see that in the modem's manuals as this modem can also deliver a true VOIP service. It's not that we are looking to no longer power the device, it's that the device we now use will be in your home instead of being mounted on the exterior. This new modem works just as well as the current set-up you have today and will have no issues with the fax or home alarm systems you have today. This modem has been deployed already for 5 years in other markets today. The battery is optional and you are not forced to purchase one, its offered for customers that have a traditional POTS phone in the home and would like the use of their phone in the event of a commercial power outage. If you have a UPS in the home for your internet service you can use that to keep power to this modem as well in the event you would have a loss of power in the home. We understand change is not openly accepted at times but trying relay other than where this modem will be installed, there is no difference in the service.
