Trying to reset my WAN IP address in 2021 and get a new IP
Was doing some research and found that my IP address hadn't changed in almost 30 days - very worrisome for security and privacy reasons. I'm a RESIDENTIAL subscriber, not a business subscriber so I shouldn't have a static IP assigned to me at all times. I've been trying to reset my IP address by rebooting my Internet modem - no dice. I've left it unplugged and not powered for 5-12 hours - still same IP. Did Cox suddenly stop doing Dynamic IP configs? Are all customers just static now? I tried calling technical support about this and they weren't of any help, totally incompetent. Are any Cox Communications technical support personnel able to verify or assist with my concerns? I do NOT want to retain the same public WAN IP address for any longer than 2 or 3 weeks. That's insane. Thanks in advance.2.7KViews0likes3CommentsWhat controls WAN lease time - Router, cable modem, ISP?
Who/What controls WAN lease time - Router, cable modem, ISP? We are in Rancho Palos Verdes, CA Cox recently changed all neighborhood IPs, apparently as part of some maintenance. Now I see - Lease Obtained 0 days,1 Hours,0 Minutes Lease Expires 0 days,0 Hours,57 Minutes ... And in the R7000 router logs, repeats of this every hour - [Time synchronized with NTP server] Friday, Jul 15,2016 05:36:21 [Internet connected] IP address: 72.99.99.99, Friday, Jul 15,2016 05:36:20 [Time synchronized with NTP server] Friday, Jul 15,2016 05:06:21 [Internet connected] IP address: 72.99.99.99, Friday, Jul 15,2016 05:06:20 ... which may explain why Netflix kept going black periodically last night. NO related hourly entries in the cable modem log. cable modem = Motorola SB6120 router = R7000, fw=V1.0.5.70_1.1.91 P.S. this did not happen before Cox changed the WAN IP ...
