My Insane data usage solved!!!
Just wanted to take a moment and post for other cox subscribers out there that may have an issue with reaching the 1TB data cap. Recently I went over my 1Tb, I had never came close to this amount. For the life of me swore we actually used less internet than the previous months. Well turns out my new Technicolor cgm4140 gateway from cox will pull 300mbps and higher on the 5GHz frequency. This caused my netflix accounts to stream at the highest quality setting because by default it is set to auto quality. This will cause your data usage to go through the roof. I changed my account setting on netflix to medium on main account and low on the other users for that account and for the month of January I have only used HALF of my data. My old gateway would only do between 25mbps to 50mbps so the stream quality was never high and I would see between 300 to 500 Gigs usage. This also applies if you have youtube and other apps that have it set to auto stream your quality. So for few month I have notice I keep getting warning from COX that my internet data cap reach and I was over, OK...called CS and all I got was there are data caps on internet services packages...Rep asked me if I stream movies a lot, well simple answer be yes, and he tells me that where my majority of my data usage goes and if I get cable I won't use as much on movie streaming. So what I understand that data cap was introduce to upsell their own long time customers to earn extra $. That is pathetic and come on its CABLE service where we suppose to get more without worryingabout going over like cellphones. I'm paying premier package and 300gb cap? come on. That's not even possible to use through the month and don't tell me few eat up all thebandwidth in your network. Data cap is understandable but not accepted from customers and I'm not the only one in cox complaining about it and don't tell me I need toswitch to $100 package which only caps it at 400gb. With the current policy of data caps I decided to track my usage at the router level. I just checked my cox account and from start of my billing cycle to yesterday (6-26-17 thru 7-11-17) states I have used 205 GB. When I check my router Netgear r7000 that I started tracking a day before my billing cycle to today (6-25-17 thru 7-12-17) states I used only 187GB. That is a discrepancy of 18GB! I would not care normally but since it is now policy to charge if and when we go over 1TB, this phantom data can be a means to charge overages. I highly disagree with any data caps in principle and function but if you choose to institute a cap then I expect it to be accurate. I want to know what Cox's stance on the accuracy on the data meter and discrepancies when I track my own. I would attach screen captures but your forum is too lackluster to properly insert. Since I have renegotiated my price my internet data usage has spiked to more than 2X my previoususage. I added the additional 500GB of data so I wouldn’t go over and now this month I am on trend to use more than the 1TB + 500GB. I’ve changed my network password and name, even factory reset it. No new devices or software are being used. Has anybody else experienced this? I’ve spoken to tech support over the phone and they’ve been utterly useless and suggest I up my plan AGAIN to the unlimited. Mine says the data cycle rolls over the 24th which is today but I'm worried the data cap won't reset and I will charged overage fees. Also, as a side note I would also like to know why I bought 150 down speed but only get 30 every time I test it. So if you live in California, apparently Cox is now going to cap your data at 1TB, and charge you a ridiculous amount for overages. WHY? Why am I paying for high speed, premium service, when I can't use it? I can exceed the cap in less than a day. In fact, if I leave my streaming services on, my bill would theoretically be about $25,000 with overages. WTF Cox? Are you serious? Data usage has increased over the years, and with the available streaming choices, internet users WILL be using tons of data. That's just how it works. I have 5 adults in my famiily, and they all use computers. Of course our usage will top 1TB per month. I see that COX has provided an solution for the data cap by dreaming up a 'service' called Unlimited data, which does nothing but cost the consumer more money. Does it give them better performance? NO. Better quality of service? NO. Anything? NO. It is simply a way for Cox to make more money. Placing data caps does nothing but piss of customers. If you want to charge more for your service, JUST DO THAT. Don't hide it under a guise of something that it is not. If Cox decides to stick to its data cap policy, I for one will find another internet service provider. How come cox doesn't advertise their awesome data caps in their description of service? It's pretty clear as to what speed you pay for but where is the cap mentioned? How would the average consumer know they are dealing with an ISP that invokes a data cap if most ISPs do not cap data plans and therefore would not look for this as a reason to or not to choose this service. Most consumers only associate data caps with mobile plans. Hence ATT selling their 2Gb plan or T-Mobile a 10Gb etc. Yet cox hides this because they know this is a negative selling point. I got messages when on the Premier tier that I was exceeding my data cap, so I upgraded to Ultimate. Now I'm exceeding it on Ultimate. I have an extremely Internet-active household with several people using streaming video and music, lots of connected devices, people working from home over VPN, online gaming, etc. so I don't think I'll see my data usage going down much. As I understand it, I am at the highest tier of residential service so it doesn't seem to be an option to do as Cox suggests and upgrade to a higher tier plan. What are the options? If I switch to a Business connection, does the bandwidth cap increase or go away? I'm willing to pay for the bandwidth I use, but Cox doesn't seem to provide a sufficient option for me to do that, at least in the Residential offerings.2.8KViews0likes2CommentsData Cap
I noticed my Premier Internet account has a 300 GB data limit applied to it. I can't find anything related to a data cap in any of the material on the website, or any of the documents that I've received from Cox. Does the data cap not apply to customers in Tulsa (hence not being mentioned anywhere), is it mentioned on a very obscure page somewhere, or did I just fall for the old internet-switch-a-roo (fraud)?
