Data Usage Discrepancy
With the current policy of data caps I decided to track my usage at the router level. I just checked my cox account and from start of my billing cycle to yesterday (6-26-17 thru 7-11-17) states I have used 205 GB. When I check my router Netgear r7000 that I started tracking a day before my billing cycle to today (6-25-17 thru 7-12-17) states I used only 187GB. That is a discrepancy of 18GB! I would not care normally but since it is now policy to charge if and when we go over 1TB, this phantom data can be a means to charge overages. I highly disagree with any data caps in principle and function but if you choose to institute a cap then I expect it to be accurate. I want to know what Cox's stance on the accuracy on the data meter and discrepancies when I track my own. I would attach screen captures but your forum is too lackluster to properly insert. Since I have renegotiated my price my internet data usage has spiked to more than 2X my previoususage. I added the additional 500GB of data so I wouldn’t go over and now this month I am on trend to use more than the 1TB + 500GB. I’ve changed my network password and name, even factory reset it. No new devices or software are being used. Has anybody else experienced this? I’ve spoken to tech support over the phone and they’ve been utterly useless and suggest I up my plan AGAIN to the unlimited. I am a Computer Programmer with a BA in Business Information Systems and Seven Microsoft Certifications including MS Professional and MS Specialist as DBA. I use the internet extensively and until the new cap came in, our usage was less than 800 GB a month. Now, I am supposedly going over every month. My wife and I have cut our internet usage in half, yet we still go over and, because of the over charges, last week I changed our wi-fi passwords, loaded the MAC ID of every device in our home and locked the router from allowing any new devices from connecting. We purposely avoided using data on a single day so we have a good bottom level usage with all the cameras and all the computers going. On that day we used (supposedly 11 or so GB) On Thursday, December 28 my wife and I turned off all but one computer and our video cameras, and we left town. Today I get email stating I have used 86% of our data, but we aren't even home! I logged onto the Cox.net website and it shows that we have been using data for the last three days at the same rate as they claimed we was using last month. No one home, one computer and six - three and four year old - surveillance cameras with a 320x280 video over the internet when I log into them remotely through the internet. Their daily data meter shows that we are using just as much data while we are four hundred miles away as we do when we spend all day steaming on two computers at the same time. On Thursday, when we left town, according to the current reading on our daily usage, we had supposedly already used 25 GB, then Friday when we weren't even home, and still aren't and computers are turned off, Router is secured as of the 26th, we supposedly used 30GB of data!!! I am sure they will say that I am using 30 or more today as well even though I am 420 miles from home. I notice on the Data Usage Tool that Dec 1, changes were made to bandwidth measurements in RI. I think the new measurements are not accurate and posting to see if anyone else is having issues. In Dec, I had 30+GB/day for 3 days that we were out of town. The spike did not continue to show any type of hack and other than those days, I would say that the usage trend follows our data usage but the volume is 2-3x's higher than it should be. When I noticed that we were going to approach our max, I put the family on a Netflix hiatus. I run a secure network with a strong password but I changed it today just to rule that out. I've shut down an iMac that is rarely used to simplify troubleshooting. We are only using macs, ipads, and iphones. If the problem continues, I will unplug my router for a day and see what the data usage is then. I'm wondering if the tool is measuring bandwidth from my cable box router? I also wonder if it's just incorrectly using a multiplier of actual data since the trend is correct except for the 3 days we were not a home. On a separate note, I discovered an issue with NETFLIX that did cause my data to be higher than needed. You cannot manage quality by device, only by account. Further, "HD and Ultra HD" are included in the same tier so you can choose low, medium (standard definition) or high. If on HD or auto, NETFLIX chooses stream rate based on the customer's available bandwidth. Since I'm on COX's highest plan, I'm at 100Mbs and getting a 7GB/hour stream from Netflix even if my kid is watching NETFLIX on an iPad or if I only need 3GB/hour HD because I don't have a 4K TV. I've contacted NETFLIX about this since it they are wasting their own bandwidth as much as mine. Any one else having issues in RI after the change? Right about the same time I received a letter from Cox indicating the 1TB data cap, my daily data usage suddenly skyrocketed from about 5G per day for the past year, to 40-70G per day! We haven't changed any habits or added any devices or people. We don't live close enough for any neighbors to scam off our wifi .Cox support can't help me, but I'm about to be charged $20 PER DAY for the next 9 days of my billing cycle unless I shut everything off completely (since we have NO IDEA WHERE ON EARTH we could be using that much data. Its borderline impossible. I would have to stream 24 hours straight of HD Netflix to use 70G! I feel like Cox is sandbagging the data tracker. I've been told by sales people and the tech people that viewing shows with the Contour app or watching tv online through thehttps://watchtv.cox.com/ website will not use my Internet data but I can not find written confirmation of this. Can you please provide written confirmation of this. I stumbled across a data usage meter on the Cox website. I have internet preferred and it says that I have 250GB of data usage allowed each month. I have never before seen specifications on the amount of data available for each of the internet plans. Is it on my bill or is it shown on each of the internet services? As of now Cox is not charging extra for data usage overrides. However, do we really think that they will in the future. Think about it. The cell phone companies charge for data also and if you use more you pay for it. Just another way that the cable companies will eventually find a way to screw the consumer.2.1KViews0likes1Comment
