SMTP Server fails to connect with iPhone LTE or 3G
My iPhone completely stopped sending email, using Cox smtp server. Receiving email works fine as usual. I've been with Cox for over 15 years. I've had iPhones since the day they came out. About 10 days ago, sending email from the iPhone 5S completely stopped. I called, and was told I needed to change my password. Why? Who knows. So I did that. No good. I deleted the entire email account from the iPhone, set it up again. No good. Nothing had changed on my end. I don't, and haven't needed to adjust settings for email in a few years. But it won't send. And at this point, Cox SMTP will not send through LTE or 3G. I called again. Explained the situation. When I am at home, and my iPhone is on the WiFi router, it would send just fine. If I turn off WiFi, or if I am 100 miles away from any WiFi network, and running on LTE or 3G, smtp FAILS. Period. That is the problem. I couldn't make the Cox Tech understand this. All she kept saying was I need to have WiFi on. I always have WiFi on. But I am not always connected to a WiFi network. When I walk into my house, the iPhone auto connects to WiFi at home. I drive a truck all over this country. I have always been able to send email through Cox smtp on LTE or 3G. Not any more. The tech was obviously lost. No clue what she was talking about. I am not a computer dummy. I have web sites, and run my own servers. I don't use Windows at all on my PC. I use Linux. My servers have email, services including web mail. My fix........... STOP playing around with unknowledgeable people that call themselves TECH's at Cox and use my own SMTP Service on my server. PROBLEM SOLVED. Once I get all of my email addresses changed over to my own domain , I'll stop using Cox email all together. To log into web mail, with the iPhone is almost impossible. Safari continues to give me an error, "Too Many Redirects. Destination Unreachable". Cox email, in general, is not worth the hassle. And sadly, email isn't rocket science. Now, to throw in another unique problem..... My account only lists 1 email account. 6 to 10 months ago, maybe longer..... I had 3 email accounts under my Cox account. 2 were used by my daughter. She has her own server now, so a few months ago, I deleted both of her email accounts from my account. And you know what...... BOTH of those 2 email accounts are still available and working, even though they are not even listed in my account...............anywhere. They do not show up in my Cox account. The passwords for those 2 email accounts can't even be changed. But they work, sending and receiving. Hopefully,the right people (that care) will see this, as it is causing Cox initiated message delivery failures for anyone doing SpamCop BL lookups. Blacklisted SMTP server IP is 68.230.241.237. Other Cox SMTP servers appear to be fine, but I'm not going to go through all of them to check. Basically I have my own domain (registered with GoDaddy, hosted with a small hosting company, and the domain's email service currently provided by Google Apps). I want to run a mail-merge with Word and Outlook to send emails to folks I'm running a contest for, but Google doesn't like me sending so many emails so quickly. I was wondering if I can use my ISP (Cox) SMTP to send the emails, without revealing my cox email address (they would only see admin@mydomainname.com). I have a UNIX host that sends email via SMTP with a c language script I wrote. The script was sending out the FROM command like this: "MAIL FROM: name <name@host.com> \r\n" It has worked for years until just the other day it sputtered then stopped alltogether. Dear Cox Technical Support: You've got a MAJOR problem that you are not making your support staff (and customers asking related questions) aware of. I found out the hard way when critical e-mails sent while traveling in Brazil and Mexico were never received by the recipients. The worst part about this is that Cox's SMTP Server smtp.cox.net (using SSL and Port 465 as instructed) receives and acknowledges the mail, and sends no error message (so the message goes to the "Sent" folder on the device sending the e-mail, appearing that the email has been successfully sent). The only way you will ever find out there is a problem is when people complain that they never got your email. This can cost $$ or even your job (or a promotion) because you will seem like a flake. If you cannot or will not allow these e-mails to be processed, at least you MUST respond with an error to the customer's mail client. You should educate your support staff that this is the way it works, and contact the users that inquired about this to tell them you now acknowledge the problem, and if Cox doesn't fix it, everyone traveling must use an alternate SMTP server (such as gmail). I have 2 separate Cox email accounts set up in Outlook 2013. The primary email associated with my Cox account receives email just fine, but I get an error message when sending: "Your outgoing (SMTP) e-mail server has reported an internal error. If you continue to receive this message, contact your server administrator or Internet Service Provider (ISP). The server responded: 554 eastrmimpo110.cox.net too many bad commands fr" I am using the following settings for the SMTP server: server name: smtp.cox.net Box checked for outgoing server requires authentication (use same settings as incoming mail server) outgoing server 465, SSL I have a secondary Cox email account set up in Outlook at the default account to send. This is not a question, it is problem report. For the last several days, beginning Wednesday 9/20, email connectivity when on my home network and using a Cox internet connection has been intermittent, and sending email has been nearly impossible. The settings on my Outlook and Thunderbird clients have not changed, and my home network configuration has not changed. This problem is a Cox problem in my area (zip code 90274). It is a cox problem because my other email accounts work just fine, all using IMAP / SMTP. When I leave my house and use my smartphone to send email, it sends immediately (in this case, using Verizon's cellular network / internet connection.) I truly wish Cox would be honest about the status of their services. I've had issues before with it not saving outgoing mail in Thunderbird, but NEVER in sending. This has appeared over the last 24 hours or so, still works fine in my phone & iMac (both using IMAP and Apple Mail). Now that I'm typing this I realize it might be JUST due to the VPN. I do use it with different end points/cities. But either way it's happening and I need to be able to send e-mails, regardless of what city/country I appear to be sending from.
